In a plumbing emergency, the actions you take in the first few minutes matter enormously. Stay calm and follow these five steps to protect your home while help is on the way.

1. Shut off the water

Stop the source. For a single fixture, use its local shut-off. For a major leak or burst pipe, close the main water valve.

2. Cut the power if needed

If water is near outlets, your electrical panel, or appliances, shut off power to the affected area at the breaker to avoid shock hazards.

3. Drain the lines

Open the lowest faucets in the house to drain remaining water and relieve pressure in the system.

4. Contain the damage

Move valuables, use towels and buckets, and mop up standing water to limit damage while you wait.

5. Call a professional

Get a licensed plumber on the way immediately. Describe the problem clearly so they arrive prepared.
