AC Not Cooling? Troubleshooting Tips Before You Call

When your air conditioner runs but the house won't cool, a few simple checks can sometimes solve the problem or at least help your technician arrive prepared. Here's what to look at before you call.

Start with the simple stuff

• Check the thermostat is set to cool and below room temperature
• Replace a dirty air filter, which is the most common cause of weak airflow
• Make sure all vents are open and unblocked
• Check the breaker hasn't tripped

Look at the outdoor unit

Clear leaves, grass, and debris away from the condenser. The unit needs airflow to release heat. If the coils are caked with dirt, the system can't cool efficiently.

Signs you need a professional

If the unit is blowing warm air, forming ice, leaking water, or making grinding noises, those point to refrigerant or mechanical issues that require a licensed technician.
