Furnace Not Heating? Run Through This Checklist

A furnace that won't heat during a New Jersey cold snap is more than uncomfortable. Before you call, a few quick checks can sometimes get the heat back on, or at least help your technician diagnose it faster.

Check these first

• Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature
• Replace a clogged air filter restricting airflow
• Make sure the furnace power switch is on
• Check the breaker hasn't tripped
• For gas furnaces, confirm the gas supply is on

Look and listen

If the furnace starts but shuts off quickly, short cycles, or blows cold air, those point to issues like a failing igniter, flame sensor, or limit switch that require a professional.
