How to Fix a Clogged Toilet (With or Without a Plunger)

On Call NJ · Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Experts

A clogged toilet ranks among the most urgent household problems. Before you panic, know that most clogs can be cleared with a few simple techniques. Here's what to try, step by step.

With a plunger

Use a flange plunger for the best seal. Insert it to cover the drain hole completely, then push and pull with firm, steady strokes. The suction on the pull is what breaks the clog. Keep enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger head.

Without a plunger

  • Pour in hot (not boiling) water and a squirt of dish soap, then wait
  • The soap lubricates and the hot water helps break up the clog
  • A toilet brush can work as a makeshift plunger in a pinch
  • An enzyme-based drain product can dissolve organic clogs overnight

What not to do

Avoid chemical drain cleaners in toilets, which can damage the porcelain and pipes. And never keep flushing a clogged toilet, which only risks an overflow.

If the clog won't budge or backs up into other fixtures, the problem may be deeper in the line. Call 862-860-1807.
