The pipes in your home can be made from several materials, each with its own strengths and lifespan. Knowing what you have helps you understand maintenance needs and when upgrades make sense.

Common materials

Copper

Durable and long-lasting, copper has been a standard for decades. It resists bacteria and handles heat well, though it's more expensive.

PEX

Flexible plastic tubing that's become popular for its ease of installation, freeze resistance, and lower cost.

PVC and CPVC

Rigid plastic used for drain lines and, in the case of CPVC, hot water supply. Affordable and corrosion-resistant.

Galvanized steel

Found in older homes, galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside over decades and is often a candidate for replacement.
